New Hyundai Sonata has a 2.o Turbocharged engine making 245 hp/260 ft-lbs of torque, yet it takes EIGHT SECONDS to get to 60 MPH.

Kinja'd!!!

To put that into perspective, the Ford Fusion, which has 240 hp and 270 ft-lbs of torque gets to 60 in 6.8 seconds.

Even some N/A competitors get there faster. The Mazda6 does it in 7.8 and the Honda Accord Sport in 7.5 seconds. Both make less then 200 horsepower.

So tell my Hyundai, where is all that power going? Or are Korean horses smaller then the rest of the world?

The 2011 Optima SX Turbo, which had the same engine I believe, did zero to 60 in 6.1. Must be a typo or some data wrong somewhere.

The only real factor between them would be weight then, the fusion does weigh 200lbs less than the sonata so there's that. May also be how the transmission goes through gears, the sonata may just have a slow slushbox that takes forever to change gears.

If it has the 8 speed trans then it's shifting way before the turbo has time to spool. They got the hp rating from a fully spooled turbo. But that trans is revshiftrevshiftrevshiftrevshiftrevshift before it's doing 60.

The last-gen Sonata 2.0T had 274 HP, but I think its MPG numbers (which were initially advertised as only trailing the base engine by 1 MPG highway IIRC) went down significantly after Hyundai got caught lying about them - the decrease in power likely has something to do with getting better MPG, which would attract more buyers.

Yeah, but all the magazine numbers were from the first drive press cars, not the production models. Have to wait a month or two for 'full test' articles to roll out to see if it's really a dog or if Hyundai just builds crappy pre production vehicles.

Or have an owner do an instrumented test I suppose.

I'm still surprised they dumbed down the HP rating. My mom had a 2012 Optima SX with 270HP and that thing was actually a lot of fun to drive. It moved for a 4 cylinder sedan! Ya, there was lag and some (a lot of) torque steer but I still think they should have kept it where it was at. And clearly they made a mistake.

On a side note, I wasn't a fan of the last gen Sonota look, but I like this one. I'm kind of surprised so many people hate it.

Her new Passat 1.8T does the deed 0.7 seconds faster while on regular fuel in a 1.8 liter turbocharged engine with 174 bhp. My classmates, who will inevitably buy these things in the coming months, will have nothing to brag about when they hit 60 slower than a 3-cylinder Mini Cooper or an $18k Volkswagen Golf 1.8T Launch Edition.

It's not that heavy. A Mustang or a Camaro are heavier. A current Maxima weights about the same, as well. A 2014 Accord with a V6 weighs 3,550ish lbs. I'd say ~3600 lbs is completely normal (sadly).
